Objectives:
Students will be able to complete (write responses in 3-4 sentences) the Treasure Hunt using the websites provided with 85% accuracy.

Rationale:
To understand the role of African Americans in the Civil War. Learning how people lived and how they were treated will hopefully give a better understanding on why the Civil War is important.
Sequence of Activities:
Anticipatory Questions/Activity:
Have the students consider what it was like to live as a slave. Describe their lifestyle and how people treated them before the war, then explain that the views did not change much even after the war started. Ask for their feelings? Have them ask questions, write them on the board and see if after the lesson they can answer them.

The first all African American voluntary regiment fought and mostly died for their freedom during the Civil War. Segments of "Glory" could be watched to explain the importance of this event in history.

Review the role of slaves in society. Harriet Tubman - a slave women who freed many slaves with the underground railroad. She became a spy for the Union Army . In 1862 Congress passed a law to allowing African Americans to serve in the Union Army. The men that volunteered were not allowed to serve with the white soldiers. They were paid less until 1864. Many Southern soldiers threaten to publicly kill any African American soldiers that were captured.

The students will complete the Treasure Hunt on African Americans during the Civil War. They will use the list of websites that are provided for them on the website. This will be counted as a grade.
